“Music on the Spectrum” (working title) follows five autistic students through the first three years of a ground-breaking music education program at the Boston Conservatory of Music. The film chronicles the musical growth of these students, not only in their lessons but in their homes, at their schools, in their communities and in other musical experiences that become available to them as they progress.

The film will be edited from this footage as well as from interviews with the students, their music instructors, their families, and their school teachers. Also featured will be commentary from professional musicians who have a diagnosis of ASD, faculty and administration at the Boston Conservatory and highly respected autism professionals in the Boston area. The musical score for the film will be created by various autistic musicians, including the five students who are the main focus of the story.

We hope that the finished film will provide an insightful documentation of this exciting program, a model for other music educators and institutions to emulate, and an open door through which society can see and understand the unique talents and personalities of those on the autism spectrum.

We believe that these opportunities in music will also change and enhance the students’ place in society, perhaps in ways that have not yet been imagined.
